Plug & Play, the swan song of Pittsburgh, PA’s Betamaxx, is the latest album to blow me away with its sometimes dreamy, often emotional, and consistently cool sounds.
Mobile Suit Gundam. Mobile Suit Freakin’ Gundam. I somehow thought it would be a good idea to for my first anime retrospective to be about what I’m confident in calling one of the most influential pieces of animated storytelling of the past 30 years. Fans of the Gundam franchise are often liked to Trekkies, and for good reason. I am admittedly an avid fan since I was a child, and while it may seem very overwhelming initially to tackle the meta-series under the umbrella term “Gundam“, it is one that is ultimately rewarding both in terms of storytelling and lasting influence.
February saw the release of two movies that have been panned for years that have nonetheless maintained something resembling a cult status. Don’t Answer the Phone is a movie about an amateur body-building adult photographer (stop me if you’ve heard this before) who sexually assaults and murders young women.
Can there be such a thing as arena synthwave? Carpenter Brut’s EP III answers with a resounding (and incredibly loud) yes!
The music has a theatrical quality, as with most music associated with members Alex Westaway and Dan Haigh. That’s all I’m going to say about their previous musical endeavors.
