The New Matrix Trailer Just Dropped, and it’s WILD

It’s been almost 20 years (tempus fugit, huh?) since the last Matrix film was released, and today we’ve gotten our first look at the new trailer for the upcoming “The Matrix Resurrections,” set to debut December 22nd!

…and let me tell ya, it looks absolutely BONKERS.

Neo Matrix Resurrections

It seems that a lot has happened to Neo since we last saw him—he’s stuck yet again in the Matrix, and apparently without his memory. Alice in Wonderland references abound once more, and there are several shots of Neo attending a psychiatrist (Neil Patrick Harris) who has prescribed him little blue pills. Of course, this calls back to the famous blue pill/red pill scene in the original Matrix.

Remember – “You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe… whatever you want to believe.”

Don’t worry – it doesn’t seem like he takes them for long…

New and Returning Matrix Characters – And Those Left Behind

It looks like several characters are returning, such as Jada Pinkett Smith’s Niobe, and Lambert Wilson’s Merovingian. There are a host of new characters as well, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris. The trailer also strangely includes someone who looks very much like a younger Morpheus.

However, we doubt this Morpheus. Laurence Fishburne explicitly stated in a recent interview that “I am not in the next Matrix movie.” Considering Morpheus died in The Matrix Online video game – which is apparently cannon – this makes sense. Perhaps the character is his son or something? We don’t really know.

But stranger still is the inclusion of characters once thought dead, like Carrie-Anne Moss‘s Trinity, who goes full psycho mode in the trailer, pulling off insane time-warping combat that previously was limited to Neo himself.

In another short clip, we see her skin outlined in code from the Matrix. Is this her ghost? Maybe some of these characters are not who they seem? Perhaps there is hope for Morpheus after all.

The movie is called “Resurrections” after all…

Trinity Not Dead Matrix Resurrections

Loosely derived from the ground-breaking anime “Ghost in the Shell,” the previous Matrix trilogy was an incredible highlight in cinematic history. Say what you want about the sequels, but love em’ or hate em’ the first “The Matrix” definitely defined a lot of childhoods.

We’re incredibly excited to see the first trailer for the new film – and like all reboots (or in this case, Resurrections,) we’re waiting with bated breath – hoping they don’t royally screw it up!

Now, for what you’ve been waiting for:
